Never Underestimate The Benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is an art that has been around for centuries that consists of using certain scents to elicit certain responses. The benefits of aromatherapy are balked at by many who can't fathom that smelling certain aromas can cause someone to feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and they certainly can't believe that certain scents can relieve pain, but it's true. Just by smelling certain aromas, aromatherapy can relieve all sorts of symptoms. So, if you or someone you know still needs convincing as to the benefits of aromatherapy, it's recommended that you give it a try. Once you light those candles, incense sticks, oil burners, or use any other aromatherapy product, you'll be hooked as the benefits of aromatherapy will then become very apparent.

Choose Your Type

When testing out the benefits of aromatherapy, you have many options available to you. It all depends on your preference, as there is an aromatherapy product out there for everyone. If you like candles, aromatherapy candles are very popular. If you like incense, those, too, are very popular. However, many people choose to go another route. For those people, there are essential oils that can be burned in a diffuser, which releases a fine mist into the air, there are essential oils that can be rubbed on, such as those used by masseuses, and then there are organic aromatherapy products, such as shampoos, lotions, and more. No matter what type of aromatherapy product you choose, the benefits of aromatherapy can be had by all of them.

What Ails You

When you choose your aromatherapy product, you then have to choose which scents to use. Something to try if you're a beginner to aromatherapy is to get your hands on an aromatherapy starter kit. The starter kits typically come with a variety of scents with descriptions for each one. You will learn the name of the various scents as well as which aromatherapy benefits can be expected from each one. For example, chamomile is often used for relaxation, as is patchouli, which is typically used for meditation. However, there are also scents that can rejuvenate you if you're feeling tired, there are scents that can liven up a romantic atmosphere and then there are some that can relieve joint pain, migraines and even muscle spasms.

The benefits of aromatherapy have been enjoyed by many people, for many years, and it's a travesty to outright dismiss them because you don't believe it's possible to feel a certain way by smelling a certain scent. Just open your mind, choose your product, your scent and see what kinds of benefits from aromatherapy you can receive, if any. You'll see that once you feel the benefits of aromatherapy, you'll be hooked and you'll want to tell all of your friends that aromatherapy isn't a myth, it's absolutely real.

Aromatherapy and Homeopathy Treatments for Acne

In the first part of this article, we have discussed the importance of herbal medicines and vitamin therapy in the fight against acne. I promised to give you more. Keeping true to my words, I now bring you the second part of the series.

Aromatherapy and homeopathy are two of the oldest methods of treating acne. Read on to know how they help counter acne.

Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has long been considered as a natural remedy for acne problems. Of the different essential oils used for this purpose, tea tree oil is regarded as the most effective. It is known to contain both antifungal and antiseptic properties, which help defend the skin against acne outbreaks. It is also known to possess antiviral and antibacterial properties, which further protects the skin from disease causing micro organisms.

Researches prove that tea tree oil is as effective as benzoyl peroxide in treating acne minus its negative side effects. In a clinical study published by the Medical Journal of Australia in 1990, it was established that using 5% tea tree oil or a 5% benzoyl peroxide in treating acne produces more or less the same results. The only drawback in using the former is that it took a little longer to produce noticeable results.

Other aromatherapy oils that can be used to counter the problem are jasmine (Jasminum officinale), lavender (Lavendula agustifolia), myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), sandalwood (Santalum album) and Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata). These essential oils all contain the chemical substance farnesol which is responsible in inhibiting the growth of certain acne-causing bacteria.

To use aromatherapy in dealing with facial acne, you may apply a drop of tea tree oil using a cotton bud directly to the skin or you can use it in your steam facial. Just add a few drops of the oil in a basin full of hot water and presto!

If you prefer to use a combination of essential oils, you may want to try this mixture: Combine 5 drops geranium, 7 drops lavender, 7 drops atlas cedarwood and 12 drops tea tree essential oil with ¼ ounce jojoba oil in a small glass vial. Jojoba oil will serve as the base oil for the mixture. It will also increase the total absorptive capacity of the oils in the skin. The mixture can be applied directly to the blemish with a cotton swab or by using your finger. Just make sure that you wash your hands first to avoid infections.

However, it is sensible always to observe caution in using any type of medication. Although aromatherapy is considered safe for most people, some may still have reactions to some of the components of essential oils.

Homeopathy Treatment. Homeopathic doctors consider acne as an indication of a deeper internal problem and hence, should not be treated using topical medications. Instead, the patient's general health condition is taken into consideration to come up with the correct formula to address the problem. Homeopathy upholds the principle of complete and gentle healing. It works by attempting to stimulate the body's own natural healing capacity so that healing comes from within.

When you undergo a homeopathy treatment, you will notice a temporary acne outbreak. Don't worry since this only indicates that the treatment is working favorably. This phase will be followed by noticeable signs of improvement - your skin texture will improve and the redness, itchiness and roughness of your skin will be considerably less. Your complexion will steadily improve from thereon. In homeopathy, each case is unique. For best results, it is imperative that you consult with a qualified practitioner.

Treat Your Feet with Aromatherapy Booties

While they might sound silly to the uninitiated, aromatherapy booties are quickly becoming one of the most popular items on the rest and relaxation market. Designed for the purpose of letting you unwind from your hectic day and pamper your feet that have worked just as hard as you have, these booties could very well be a trend that's here to stay. As the heat from the booties takes your feet to a level of heaven, the scent coming from the aromatherapy will dazzle your sense and take you to another world. A world of relaxation and peace far, far away from the busy schedules and constant cacophony of a twenty-first century life.

So, you may be asking yourself, what exactly are aromatherapy booties? Well, they're quite a simple and ingenious invention, and are just about what you would think they are from the name. You simply take these small booties and slap them in the microwave for about half a minute to a minute. The heat they exude from this should awaken the senses in your feet, but that's not even the best part. The heat also draws out the natural essential oils from the booties and puts the aromatherapy to work. So, while you're relaxing after a hard day at work, not only do you get to pamper your feet, but you get to enjoy the soothing scents of natural aromas. If you're a victim of dry feet, you can enhance the booties by rubbing some lotion into the product before putting them on.

If you feel like you would rather have a moister experience, you can take a spray bottle and work the booties over with some water before putting them in for their microwave time. This will moisten the booties and create an altogether different experience when you wear them. Not only can that, but the addition of the water help to lengthen the life of the booties. This is because the water actually helps to preserve the state of the oils in the booties, and lengthening the time the aromatherapy works.

The next time you come home from a hard day at work and put your feet up, think about how much of your tension and aches emanates from your feet. This will be particularly true if you work a job that requires standing or walking for great lengths of time. If your feet are a constant source of stress, you might think about trying these aromatherapy booties, and seeing what a difference they can make.

Aromatherapy: Tea Tree Oil Benefits

Tea Tree oil is gaining more mainstream popularity. Long used in the aromatherapy industry, its health benefits are being touted by many companies who include it in their products.

What is tea tree oil? Its Latin name is Melaleuca alternifolia and it comes from a tree. Melaleuca trees are native to Australia although they are now also propagated in California. The common name 'tea tree' was given when British explorers used the leaves to brew tea. It's antiseptic use has been in existence for hundreds of years, but has only recently been scientifically studied (starting in 1929). The 'official' studying of tea tree oil led to ever increasing interest. Tea tree oil was even supplied in first aid kits to soldiers in the Australian army.

After harvesting, the leaves of the tree are put into a still and pressurized steam is forced through them. The steam, which extracts the essential oils, then is cooled and the tea tree oil is separated from the water.

Some of the reported benefits of tea tree oil include: antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. Antiseptic means that it will kill bacteria, such as those that cause acne. Tea tree oil has been shown to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide in controlling acne, without the irritation and skin drying that accompanies that treatment. Anti-fungal means that it will kill fungus or yeast spores. Tea tree oil used in shampoos can control dandruff by eliminating that fungus from the scalp.

If you have never smelled neat tea tree oil, prepare yourself. It is incredibly strong and smells of a disinfectant. Some people enjoy the smell, but most people find it to be displeasing. However, tea tree can be blended with other essential oils to work with and mask the odor. Tea tree oil is used for its medicinal properties - not its scent!

Tea tree oil is only used on the skin. It should never be taken internally, as it can be very toxic to the liver if ingested. If using a toothpaste with tea tree oil, take extra care not to swallow any of the toothpaste and is not recommended for children. Although tea tree oil can be used neat on the skin, it is best used in dilution to prevent sensitivity from occurring.

Some home uses for tea tree oil:

As an acne treatment, mix tea tree oil with aloe vera gel - using 5% tea tree to 95% aloe vera gel. Apply to clean skin.

Disinfectant spray: Mix a 5% dilution of tea tree oil with rubbing alcohol. Pour into a spray bottle and use this mixture to disinfect and deodorize garbage cans. You can also use this spray in your washing machine to prevent mold and mildew.

For insect bites: Mix a 5% dilution of tea tree oil with aloe vera gel. Use this mixture to soothe bug bites or rashes. It will also help prevent infection.

The uses for tea tree oil are almost endless. As more and more studies are being done, the list of the benefits of tea tree oil grows even longer.

Aromatherapy - Past, Present and Future

Aromatherapy's promising beginning was around 5000 years ago in Egypt and the way it was used then is practically identical to how it is used nowadays, namely as a health and beauty aid. Even now we are still using quite a few of the combinations of essential oils which were prescribed back then by the Egyptians.

Until antibiotics made their appearance in the medical field, aromatherapy was still considered a feasible treatment for many different kinds of ailments. However, due to modern medicine, the old methods of taking care of illness started to decline and continued on a downward spiral until around twenty years ago when society in general began to realize that not everything in the medical field worked as intended. . At this point, even medical professionals were trying to find alternative medicine to treat people with and this is where the term "Complementary Alternative Therapies/Modalities, also know as CAM came into play. Aromatherapy is now an accepted form of CAM.

The nursing organization, upon realizing the benefits of aromatherapy about fifteen years ago began to use this on their acute-care and long term-care patients. In more recent times essential oils have been used in psychology in order to enhance traditional painkillers and it has helped in the region of 80 million people cope with chronic pain. Oils are used in the area of heart disease as a means of relieving anxiety and as part of the healing process. On a day to day note, oils are used more and more for cleaning in both the home and in hospitals in place of products of a chemical nature, providing a twofold purpose of both disinfecting and allowing the benefit of the inhaled scent.

Over the years aromatherapy has gone from strength to strength with emphasis on using it safely. It is not quite as straightforward as mixing a few drops of oil and either inhaling it or allowing it into the skin by way of massage. It is necessary to know and understand the compound and the effect which will be produced from the mix, how to mix the oils properly, where to buy products of the best quality and how to avoid any risks associated with incorrect use.

As part of an increasing business aromatherapy has started the process of setting up legitimate accreditation standards and certifications so the opportunity of fraud is kept to a minimum. Due to the way the oils are extracted from the plants, the cost of oil is not cheap and the performance of the oil is dependent on the quality and the good standing of the manufacturers.

In general terms the use of aromatherapy is considered to be safe but as more and more people enter into this area, training and testing will have to be put into place so standards remain high within the industry. It would be a good idea to seek out the training and qualification procedures of nursing staff that work out of the many cancer centers, universities and hospitals and are involved with holistic medicine on a day to day basis.

The field of aromatherapy is not just about individuals seeking alternative treatments, but also about enhancing the care of patients. If certification standards where in place, this would act as a guarantee that the treatment received would be both safe and of the very best standard available.

Aromatherapy: Rosemary Essential Oil Profile

Rosemary is a popular herb for cooking and aromatherapy. It is actually a member of the mint family and is grown predominantly in Morocco and Spain. Rosemary likes a dry, hot soil. The rosemary plant is an evergreen shrub in its native regions. It can grow very tall, given the right conditions (over six feet), but in its native areas, high winds tend to keep the bush under control. In parts of the world with harsher winters (zones 5 and lower), rosemary is grown as an annual. Rosemary grows long stems covered with green needlelike leaves. Clusters of blue, pink or white flowers bloom on the ends of the stems in springtime. All of the plant parts can be used to extract the essential oil, although the highest quality oil comes from the flowers only. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation. This process involves using pressurized steam to remove the essential oils from the plant matter.

Rosemary has a bit of an old fashioned appeal to it. It is called the 'remembrance' flower and brides often carry a sprig or two in their bouquets. It is also sometimes incorporated into funeral floral arrangements.

Rosemary has a very pungent, almost medicinal odor to it with woody undertones. Very similar to eucalyptus. It was also used as a substitute for myrrh in incense, since it was much more prevalent and cheaper than myrrh. This incense would be burned as a disinfectant in hospitals.

Aromatherapy benefits of rosemary essential oil include: antiseptic, astringent, stimulant, anti-fatigue and memory enhancer. Like eucalyptus, rosemary can be used in cream rubs or vaporizers to help clear out mucus when you have a chest cold.

Rosemary home remedies

For sore muscles: Take several stems of fresh rosemary and boil them for 5 minutes. Remove from the water (being careful not to burn yourself) and wrap in several layers of gauze. Use this moist compress on sore and aching muscles.

To clear a stuffy head: Crush several stems of fresh rosemary. Place the stems into a small bowl filled with 2 cups of boiling water. Place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl, inhaling the fragrant steam. Do this for 5 minutes.

Skin toner: Crush a palm full of rosemary leaves and place into a bottle. Fill the bottle with witch hazel. To use: wet a cotton ball with the toner and apply to clean skin. Use daily.

Cautions for rosemary. Rosemary should be avoided by pregnant women, people with high blood pressure or anyone suffering from epilepsy - due to its ability to stimulate the brain. Some people may also find rosemary oil to be a skin irritant, so always dilute the rosemary in a carrier oil or do a skin test patch. Next time you use rosemary for cooking, take a moment and enjoy the crisp smell of the leaves. Just doing this can give you the aromatherapy benefits of this wonderful herb as well as the great taste! Keep a few fresh sprigs in a small vase by your desk, to invigorate you all day long.
